Week of 14 - 18 December

Freshman World History

Medieval Castle Defence Video

Monday we will finish watching a short documentary on the Medieval Church, and then students will learn firsthand about Benedictine rule by taking a Vow of Silence for the entire class, while completing a comprehensive packet on the Role of the Church in the Middle Ages. Homework is to complete the HW packet given to you in class on the Church - NOT the classwork packet.

Tuesday we will look at some of the more spectacular Cathedrals from the Middle Ages, and talk about their significance in the Medieval World. We will then talk about the reforms that went on within the Church in order to solve some of the problems that were running rampant throughout the Catholic ranks. For homework, students will complete the 14.1 worksheet on Church Reform and the Crusades.

Wednesday we will begin our lesson on The Crusades, and maybe even watch some clips from 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Here are the notes. For homework, students will complete the Crusades worksheet.

Thursday we will finish The Kingdom of Heaven and our Crusades notes, including a quick overview of the Reconquista and the Inquisition. For homework, students will complete a worksheet on the Reconquista.
Where are their PARENTS!?!?!

Friday we will be going over the Magna Carta, "The Great Chartah" as we say in Massachusetts. This was one of the earliest written records of man's rights guaranteed by government (although they wouldn't be quite yet). We'll also talk about the Black Death, or the bubonic plague. One word: YUCK! Homework will be to complete the 14.4 WS and the Joan of Arc WS, due Tuesday. Also, finish your projects for Monday!!!!

Sophomore Modern World
Today we will be holding a Peace Conference. As delegates from France, Austria-Hungary, Britain, Germany, and Russia, you will meet and look at the situation in Europe in 1914, before the outbreak of WWI. Many call this group of politicians the "Sleepwalkers", because they did not stop the series of events that led up to the outbreak of a World War, in which 17 MILLION people died. The question is, Can you stop the onslaught? Homework is to review the notes you've already taken from 13.1.

Tuesday we will finish our Peace Conference, and then discuss the long- and short-term causes behind WWI, with an acronym - WW I.M.A.N.I.A. (Industrialization, Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, Assassination). Here are the notes. For homework, students will complete a worksheet on the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand.

Wednesday we will finish WWIMANIA. Then, we will talk about the outbreak of war, focusing on the use of propaganda on the homefront. For homework, students will finish the propaganda poster they started in class, and read the excedrpt of "The Sojourn" by Andrew Krivak.

Listen carefully, and you may wonder, was Black Sabbath really singing about WWI???

Thursday we will talk all about the new technology that led to so much destruction in WWI, and how it also led to (and out of) Trench Warfare. Notes are arvailable here. For homework, students will read a packet about Early Modern Warfare and the conditions in WWI, from an anthology titled "Battle". Students will then complete this companion worksheet.

Friday, we will be.....................wait for it............................FIGHTING IN THE TRENCHES!!!!!!!! We will discuss trench life some more, including trench foot (might want to eat a light lunch today!) And then we will split up into an assault force and a defense force, and we will carry out the battle to understand what trench warfare was like and how it came about. Never Surrender!!!!!!! Homework is to complete the questions and newspaper article on the Battle of the Somme.

Junior USII
Monday we will be starting the Progressive Era by reading a new section in the textbook and answering some outline questions. No homework tonight.

Tuesday, we will go over our worksheet from Monday, and then we are spending the entire class period doing an early review for the Mid Year Exam. Bring all of your materials to class!!!

Wednesday we will delve deeper into the Progressive Era, discussing the Presidents' reforms. Homework is to read and complete the worksheet on the Progressive Era.

Thursday we will finish our activity outlining the Presidents' actions during the Progressive Era. We will then begin an activity sorting out different reformist Acts passed in this time, too. Homework is to complete 10 Presidential Reforms on our Progressive Presidents WS.
