Week of 21-23 December

Freshman World History
Monday we will review for the test tomorrow! Also, I will be collecting your Medieval Character project. Make sur eyou finish the 14.4 packet for HW, as well as study for your test tomorrow. Here is a Jeopardy game to help you out! Study well, but remember - you already KNOW this stuff, you will do great!
They even liked the legend of Star Wars during the Middle Ages.
Tuesday is test day! Get some sleep the night before - don't cram!!!! No homework tonight.

Wednesday we will be doing some trivia in class for class points, and handing back students' work. We'll also talk about the next unit when the kids get back from break, but we'll be chillin' out today...Enjoy your Christmas break!!!

Sophomore Modern World


Monday students will debreif from the activity on Friday (which they did great on, even though we ended up with a stalemate - totally realistic, actually). We will look at a slideshow of WWI from the Trench Warfare perspective, then take some notes on the largest battles of WWI. For homework, students will choose 3 battles and fill out this worksheet.


Tuesday we will delve deeper into the Battle of the Somme, and for homework students will outline 13.3. Fact for the day: Did you know? J.R.R. Tolkein, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a veteran of the Battle of the Somme, and the horrors he witnessed there would inspire many of his tales of Middle-Earth.

Wednesday students will discuss the US entry into the war as well as the Russian exit, and how the war would draw to a close. We will also begin talking about the Paris Peace Conference and Wilson's 14 Points. Enjoy your Christmas break!!!

Monday we will be reviewing for our Unit Test tomorrow on the Progressive Era. It will be a simple, 25-question multiple-choice test. Homework tonight is to study your notes and the study guides you were given in class to prepare for the test tomorrow.

Week of 14 - 18 December

Freshman World History

Medieval Castle Defence Video

Monday we will finish watching a short documentary on the Medieval Church, and then students will learn firsthand about Benedictine rule by taking a Vow of Silence for the entire class, while completing a comprehensive packet on the Role of the Church in the Middle Ages. Homework is to complete the HW packet given to you in class on the Church - NOT the classwork packet.



Tuesday we will look at some of the more spectacular Cathedrals from the Middle Ages, and talk about their significance in the Medieval World. We will then talk about the reforms that went on within the Church in order to solve some of the problems that were running rampant throughout the Catholic ranks. For homework, students will complete the 14.1 worksheet on Church Reform and the Crusades.







Wednesday we will begin our lesson on The Crusades, and maybe even watch some clips from 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Here are the notes. For homework, students will complete the Crusades worksheet.




Thursday we will finish The Kingdom of Heaven and our Crusades notes, including a quick overview of the Reconquista and the Inquisition. For homework, students will complete a worksheet on the Reconquista.

Friday we will be going over the Magna Carta, "The Great Chartah" as we say in Massachusetts. This was one of the earliest written records of man's rights guaranteed by government (although they wouldn't be quite yet). We'll also talk about the Black Death, or the bubonic plague. One word: YUCK! Homework will be to complete the 14.4 WS and the Joan of Arc WS, due Tuesday. Also, finish your projects for Monday!!!!

Sophomore Modern World
Today we will be holding a Peace Conference. As delegates from France, Austria-Hungary, Britain, Germany, and Russia, you will meet and look at the situation in Europe in 1914, before the outbreak of WWI. Many call this group of politicians the "Sleepwalkers", because they did not stop the series of events that led up to the outbreak of a World War, in which 17 MILLION people died. The question is, Can you stop the onslaught? Homework is to review the notes you've already taken from 13.1.



Tuesday we will finish our Peace Conference, and then discuss the long- and short-term causes behind WWI, with an acronym - WW I.M.A.N.I.A. (Industrialization, Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, Assassination). Here are the notes. For homework, students will complete a worksheet on the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand. 



Wednesday we will finish WWIMANIA. Then, we will talk about the outbreak of war, focusing on the use of propaganda on the homefront. For homework, students will finish the propaganda poster they started in class, and read the excedrpt of "The Sojourn" by Andrew Krivak.


Listen carefully, and you may wonder, was Black Sabbath really singing about WWI???

Thursday we will talk all about the new technology that led to so much destruction in WWI, and how it also led to (and out of) Trench Warfare. Notes are arvailable here. For homework, students will read a packet about Early Modern Warfare and the conditions in WWI, from an anthology titled "Battle". Students will then complete this companion worksheet.




Friday, we will be.....................wait for it............................FIGHTING IN THE TRENCHES!!!!!!!! We will discuss trench life some more, including trench foot (might want to eat a light lunch today!) And then we will split up into an assault force and a defense force, and we will carry out the battle to understand what trench warfare was like and how it came about. Never Surrender!!!!!!! Homework is to complete the questions and newspaper article on the Battle of the Somme.

Monday we will be starting the Progressive Era by reading a new section in the textbook and answering some outline questions. No homework tonight.



Tuesday, we will go over our worksheet from Monday, and then we are spending the entire class period doing an early review for the Mid Year Exam. Bring all of your materials to class!!! 



Wednesday we will delve deeper into the Progressive Era, discussing the Presidents' reforms. Homework is to read and complete the worksheet on the Progressive Era.



Thursday we will finish our activity outlining the Presidents' actions during the Progressive Era. We will then begin an activity sorting out different reformist Acts passed in this time, too. Homework is to complete 10 Presidential Reforms on our Progressive Presidents WS.



Friday we will complete the Presidential Reform Packet, then move on to discuss the Temperance Movement and Prohibition.

Week of 7 - 11 December

Freshman World History


Monday we will be focusing on castles, and students will be hired to design a castle for their lord and lady! Here is the assignment. Homework is to finish the blueprint for your castle. This will be a 10-point assignment.





Tuesday we will be discussing our Middle Age Character projects, then learning about chivalry and knights. We will work on a packet on Medieval Literature, available here. Homework is to read and complete the guided reading on the Age of Chivalry.

Wednesday we will discuss the Age of Chivalry some more, and students will work on creating a Coat of Arms for their House. Check out this awesome website about the symbols knights would put on their crest. Complete your crest for homework. 



Thursday, students will be doing a round robin activity to finish up the Age of Chivalry, looking at Medieval weapons and warfare, courtly romance, geography, and taking a prep quiz to check our understanding. We will finish class by filling out a thought web on the Age of Chivalry to sum up what we've learned. For homework, students must read 13.3 (pgs. 364-369) and answer #1 and 3-5 on a separate sheet of paper.

Friday we will summarize our understanding of chivalry by filling out a thought web, then go over the homework on the Role of the Medieval Church. We will finish class by watching a short segment of "The Dark Ages" from the History Channel. For homework, work on your project!!! Links for research are available at the top of the page, and it's due 12/21.

Sophomore Modern World
Monday we will be learning about Imperialism in India. We will begin class with a recap of Imperialism in the Middle East and the Scramble for Africa, along with the idea of the "White Man's Burden." Then we will move onto India, "the jewel of the crown of the British Empire." Here are the notes. Homework tonight is to outline 11.4 in your textbooks.

Tuesday we will discuss Imperialism in China and Japan, here are the notes for the former and the latter. Students will complete a short packet for packet on Chinese and Japanese imperialism. 



Wednesday we will go over American Imperialism (notes here), and discuss political cartoons. Homework is to complete the handout on the US and political cartoons.



Thursday we will finish going over political cartoons and then review for our quiz tomorrow! Homework is to study imperialism!!! Students may fill ONE side of a 3"x 5" index card with notes, for use on the Quiz tomorrow.



Friday we will have a short quiz on Imperialism. We will spend the last portion of class talking about the buildup to World War I. No homework tonight!

Junior US II
Monday we will be reviewing Nativism for the last time and beginning our discussion of Politics in the Gilded Age, focusing on political machines, political bosses, and graft.

Tuesday we will be doing an in-class activity where students will analyze political cartoons and documents from the Gilded Age and form an opinion as to whether or not the benefits of political machines outweighed the costs. Homework is to read the handout "Minorities Fight for Change" and answer #1-3.

Wednesday we will discuss our homerwork from the night before and then finish the DBQ activity. Homework is to complete your paragraph and type - 12 Times New Roman, double-spaced, proper heading.

Thursday we will be finshing up our notes on the Age of Reform, here are the notes. We will also go over Minorities' Fight for Rights, focusing on Native Americans with these notes. Study for your quiz tomorrow!

Friday we will take our quiz on Immigration and Reform, then do some trivia and review for the rest of class. Homework is to complete Part 2 of your quiz, the Graphic Organizer, for 10 pts. You may use any notes or handouts to complete this assignment. Have agood weekend!

Week of 30 Nov - 4 Dec

Freshman World History
Monday I will not be present, but students will be watching "The Dark Ages" (History Channel) and answering questions. Homework will be to complete the 13.2 Reading Packet and Questions.

On Tuesday we will go over the lioneage of Frankish Kings, with these notes. We will be reviewing the homework from last week, found here. Homework tonight is to do Pg. 363, numbers 1 and 5.

Wednesday we will go over Feudalism and the class system in place, focusing on the relationship between Kings and Nobles, as well as Nobles and Peasants. No homework tonight.




Thursday we will be doing an activity where students will conduct their own research on Life in the Middle Ages. Info will be posted around the room and students will have to explore and take notes. We will also discuss our upcoming Middle Ages Project today, due on 12/21. Here is the assignment and the rubric. For homework, students will complete a double-sided WS on Manorialism.



On Friday, students will watch a video on Castles, by David Macaulay. They will also answer these questions.For homework, students will Mind Their Manors!!! Hehe, it's a worksheet.

Sophomore Modern World
Monday I will be out, so students will have a substitute. Here is your mission: 1. Partner up. 2. Correct your homework (You will get a key). 3. Grab a book and outline 8.4 (You must know this for test on Wednesday!) 4. Accomplish these tasks before the end of the period. Homework will be to take the 8.3 and 4 Quiz (this is not graded - it's a study aid so please don't use your books and notes - see how well you do!)

Tuesday we will complete our notes ont he Artistic Revolutions and review before the test. Artisitic Revolution Notes are available here and here. For homework, study for the test tomorrow!!!

Wednesday is test day!!! No homework tonight.



Thursday, students will be conducting a Round-Robin activity, learning about Imperialism and the Scramble for Africa. God, Gold, and Glory! We'll talk briefly about the atrocities committed by Belgian companies in the Congo, and the resulting Berlin Conference. Homework tonight is to outline 13.1 and 13.2 in your books. 



Friday students will have a packet to complete on the White Man's Burden and Imperialism in Africa. For homework, students will be completing a packet on Imperialism in the Middle East.



Junior USII
Monday I will not be in school, and students will be taking a virtual tour of Ellis Island, where many "new" immigrants would first arrive to the US. Students will fill out a worksheet as they take the tour.



Tuesday we will finish the tour and go over any questions. For homework, students will study the information learned from the Tour and complete any stops we did not complete in class. Quiz Tomorrow!!!



Wednesday we will have a quiz on Ellis Island. Then we will discuss Nativism by looking at a number of political cartoons arguing for/against immigration.



Thursday we will look deeper into some of the effects of Nativism, like the Know-Nothing Party and the Chinese Exclusion Act, for example, and then look at the rise of Populism and reforms in America.

On Friday, students will complete some packets in class on Populism, Nativism, and Progressivism. Lots of isms!!! Homework over the weekend is to read Chapter 5 in your textbook at home and complete the questions at the end of the chapter.

Week of 23 - 25 November

Freshmen World History
Monday we will be learning how to meditate. We will also review World Religions and the Byzantine Empire before moving on to our next unit. Homework tonight will be to read Chapter 13, Section 1 in your textbook and define all of the Vocabulary words (there are 6 of them).

Tuesday we will take our first real look at the Middle Ages. The Middle of What??? No homework tonight - except Dragons, complete classwork.

Wednesday we will have short periods, so we will be going over some brief notes on the Kingdom of the Franks, available here. Homework will be to complete the Frankish Kings WS available here. Note: The Tigers will not have class today, but are still responsible for the homework!

Sophomore Modern World
Monday students will be reviewing Latin American revolutions and moving on to discuss the Unification of Italy in the 1800s. Notes are available here. Homework will be to finish the Italian Map WS and the accompanying timeline. 



Tuesday we will be learning about Otto von Bismarck and the Unification of Germany in the 1800s, including the ideas of "Blood and Iron" and realpolitik. Homework is to Outline 8.3 in your books.

Wednesday we will wrap up German Unification, then students will talk about the 1830 and 1848 Revolutions across Europe that may have failed, but certainly showed a new tide of nationalism across the continent. For homework, students will read and complete the packet titled "Europe Faces Revolutions." The last page (liberalism, conservativism, etc.) is NOT necessary.

Monday students will be discussing immigration further, filling out our charts on page 100 and reviewing the chart on page 103 of our packets. Homework tonight is to define the vocabulary words in the 7.1 packets tudents were given in class today.



Tuesday we will be going over New Immigration and Nativism again, with these notes. For homework, students will be writing about immigration and the "American Dream." What is it? Is it real? If yes, how do you achieve it, and if not, why not? Also think about famous people from history or modern athletes or celebrities who seem like they may have achieved the American Dream.

Week of 16-20 November

Freshmen World History

Monday we will talk a little about the events in Paris over this past weekend. We will then discuss Islam and the Five Pillars, which are as follows:

Homework tonight is to complete the Venn Tri-agram, comparing and contrasting the three Abrahamic religions. Have at least one belief in each bubble!



Tuesday we will dive a little deeper into Islam and do a fun activity where students will have to learn some Arabic!!! For homework, students must watch the following two videos and answer the corresponding questions about the Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. 






Wednesday we will recap our Arabic activity and then move on to Hinduism and Buddhism. Homework tonight will be to complete the Hinduism and Buddhism Columns in your packets.



Thursday we will finish our discussion of Buddhism and look at the sacred texts of Hinduism (Bhagavad-Gita excerpt) and Buddhism(story of Siddharta Gautama). Homework tonight is to study!!! Everything in your binder, from the Byzantine Empire through World Religions.

Sophomore Modern World

Monday we will talk a little about the events in Paris over this past weekend. We will then move onto a great activity where students will each receive some pieces of candy, and will have to play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see if they can win more. We will test the theories of Adam Smith (Capitalism, laissez-faire, the "Invisible Hand") and Karl Marx (Communism, class struggle, economic equality). Homework will be to test your opinions on Capitalism with the 2-8 WS. TEST ON WEDNESDAY!!!




Tuesday students will ask any questions they may have about Capitalism or Communism, and then we will review for tomorrow's test. The video above will help you immensely! STUDY TONIGHT!!!

Wednesday students will be taking their Unit 2 Test, on the Industrial Revolution, from it's beginning in Great Britain, to the Labor Movement, to the development of new Economic Theories. No homework tonight!!!

Thursday we will begin our new unit by discussing the Spread of Democracy to Great Britain, and also the rise of Nationalism, which will be our main focus. We will do a quick Jigsaw Activity on the Growth of Democracy in Great Britain, and then we will move on to Nationalism Notes. Homework is to read your packet on Democratic reform and Activism and complete all the questions.



Friday we will move onto Latin American Revolutions, focusing on Haiti, Spanish South America, Brazil, and Mexico. Notes are here. And here is the chart we will use. Homework is the worksheet on Toussaint L'Ouverture.

Monday we will talk a little about the events in Paris over this past weekend. Then we will take a look at the DBQ questions students answered over the Weekend in preparation for our DBQ essay. Homework tonight is to work on the Unit Vocab Review.

Tuesday we will review before our test on Wesdnesday. Finish the Review Guide tonight!!!!!



Wednesday we have our Unit Test! Study that vocab well, and get a good night's sleep tonight.

And no, that is not a correct answer...
Thursday we will begin talking about Immigration in the US from the 1800s to the early 1900s. We'll discuss the Push/Pull Factors and what that means, and also what the Push/Pull Factors are for immigrants today. Homework will be to read and answer the questions in pags. 98 and 99 in your packets.

Friday we will continue discussing immigration, including the difference between "New and Old Immigration." We will also complete the chart on pg. 100 in your packet. Homework will be pgs. 101-103 in the packet. Have a great weekend!
